History was made at Leominster Golf Course last weekend when the EGGS golf society played their Ryder Cup 2006.
A competition played between the captain's team and a team chosen by the vice-captain battle over 27 holes of matchplay for the bragging rights and the cup itself.
Never before has the cup been defended by the captain after winning it as the vice-captain the previous year.
Partenering Steve Gillobe, captain Phillip Smalley led by example and smashed the first drive of the morning down the middle of the first fairway, on his way to a fine win over Martin Cole and vice-captain Mark Haffield.
All the other doubles matches were well contested and at lunch-time the score was 3 to 2 to the vice-captain.
Over lunch, captain Smalley roused his men to produce a breathtaking performance in the afternoon singles, taking 7.5 points out of a possible 10. Winners for 'the retainers' were Steve Chin, Stuart Summers, Jeremy Finch, Phil Hunt, RJ Jackson and Phil Smalley.
This meant that the half-time deficit was easily overturned and the final score of 9.5 to 5.5 is the biggest winning margin in the EGGS history.
