PERSHORE'S massive skateboarding fraternity will be heading to Abbey Park in their droves in a months time after work began on the town's new skate park this week.
Work commenced on the exciting new venture aimed at Pershore's younger community on Monday and is expected to take around four weeks to complete.
The skate park, which has been promised to the town for a number of years, will cost around £100,000 to construct and will be sited near to the children's water play area, another recent addition to the Abbey Park.
The project, led by Wychavon District Council, has long been supported by the town council and is being built by the Grimshaw Group.
The venue will cover 276sq metres and include a half pipe, two quarter pipes, a jump box and a grind rail.
Wychavon's executive board member for community partnership, Councillor Paul Middlebrough said: "Skateboarders in Pershore are going to have a fantastic facility which I am sure will be as well used as the skateparks in Evesham and Droitwich Spa.
"I am delighted that Pershore youngsters will soon have their own park to develop their skills and who knows, we might have a future world skateboarding champion coming from Pershore."
The start of the building work has been well received by former Pershore Mayor Chris Parsons who said: "It is very good news for Pershore as they will not be using pavements and car parks anymore which can be dangerous.
"We have waited for this for some time and skateboarding is now such a big part of today's culture, that we have to admit it is here to stay.
"I am happy those who enjoy it now have somewhere safe to perform."
