PERSHORE residents turned out in force for a regal treat on Monday as the Duke of Edinburgh arrived to officially open the Number 8 community arts centre.

People began to gather from around 9.30am, hoping to get the best view of the royal visitor.

With the sense of anticipation building and a growing band of well-wishers lining the streets, the duke's helicopter appeared overhead, touching down at Abbey Park.

After a brief halt to wave to the crowd, he entered the building to officially open Number 8.

Pershore twon councillor Simon Townend said: "There was a sense of anticipation when he flew over in the helicopter, with everyone cheering and waving. There are lot of people here as well, which is good to see.

"It was something of a brief appearance though and I think some people missed it all together, but it's an important event nonetheless for Number 8, which is such a great amenity for a town as small as Pershore."

After meeting and greeting the guests, including Vale actor Alistair McGowan, the duke was shown around the Number 8 and told of its future plans.

He left after just over half an hour, with a few more waves for the crowd, who had waited so patiently.
