A KIDDERMINSTER woman who discovered maggots in her dustbin is calling for a more frequent rubbish collecting service.
Kim Hastings, of Bucklands Drive, was dismayed to find her dustbin overrun with maggots and called on Wyre Forest District Council to do something about the situation but was told she would have to pay to have the bin emptied and cleaned.
She said: "My dog had been standing next to the bin and I had to pick maggots off his back. It was disgusting.
"We have to pay more than £1,000 in council tax a year so I think it's terrible they can't put on a more frequent service. "
Andrew Dickens, head of cultural, commercial and leisure services, said: "Maggots can be a problem but if waste food products and bins are managed well they are controllable. We give general advice to anybody who contacts us on this subject."
He added that all waste or unwanted food items should be disposed of as soon as possible and not left uncovered before disposal. All waste should be wrapped before it is placed in the bin and the lid should be kept closed at all times.
He added: "Using wheeled bin liners - available from most supermarkets - and/or having bins washed by a contractor or the householder will assist in reducing the opportunities for any infestation."
