A WHEELCHAIR-bound woman from Worcester who is taking part in the Great North Run is calling on others to join her.
Raquel Mason, of Bransford Road, St John's, will undertake the 13-mile half marathon in an unassisted wheelchair to raise money for the British Red Cross - and there are another 20 Gold Bond Places still available for keen runners looking for a challenge to join her.
The 20-year-old actress, who has cerebral palsy, said she wanted to support the British Red Cross projects countywide.
"I have always admired the thousands of organisations that provide support for people all over the world when they need it most," she added.
"You hear reports about people going through crises all over the world every day - thanks to the Red Cross people faced in such awful situations have an organisation on hand to help them rebuild their lives and give them hope again."
"I therefore decided to take part in the Great North Run and help raise money for the charity."
Miss Mason added that although she is in a wheelchair, she has never let her disability stop her from achieving anything.
"I myself realise how important these organisations are and owe a big thank you to two charities that funded my electric chair and feel it is important to acknowledge these organisations," she said.
"I think it's important in life to focus on what we can do to help instead of what we can't, so if you are up for the challenge of Great North Run, want to help us raise much needed money and awareness and like the thought of being part of a supportive team then please get in touch now."
Red Cross fund-raiser Victoria Anstey said: "All of the money raised will help our local community and, with our new Worcester office build getting under way, this is a very exciting time for the local Red Cross.
"Raquel's commitment to helping us is inspirational. I would encourage everyone to get behind her and sign up."
Entrance to the Great North Run, which takes place in Newcastle on October 1, is only £25 with a sponsorship target of £300 which will help the Red Cross provide services for people in a crisis.
To sign up for the Great North Run please call Victoria Anstey on 01905 351 212 by Friday, July 21, or e-mail vanstey@redcross.org.uk or download an application form at www.redcross.org.uk
