GARDENING SOCIETY: An interesting talk with slides by Michael Leech entitled Plants With Personality was enjoyed by club members on June 15. Mr Leech arrived early for the meeting and had been to look at the Bidford allotments. He chose to talk about a handful of genera concentrating on a few species/ varieties from each in the primula family he mentioned the pink primrose, Primula Denticulata which vine weevil love.
Japanese Knotweed he said had a despicable personality. Although on river banks it seemed rather attractive bearing the previous year's flower stems, In some countries it is a crime to grow it. If willow catkins are picked almost as soon as they appear they will keep for months in water.
The result of the competition - A Jug Of Mixed Flowers was: First, Tessa Webb; second, Joan Kerr; third, Annette Haines.
The club meets in The Crawford Hall, Bidford, on the third Thursday in the month. On Thursday, July 20 there is an outing to Troll House Gardens ,Tetbury and Rodmarton Manor, Ciren-cester. On August 17, Donald Everitt will speak on lilies and summer bulbs
