MAY I, through your newspaper, write in support of the various people who, in their very limited spare time, try to support their communities by volunteering their services to maintain Scout/Guide/Cadet groups.

I have been involved in one way or another with Moreton Scout Group for over 20 years. In that time it has become harder and harder to enlist the help of volunteers, so that these days, it is down to a few hardy people who have to work their socks off just to keep such groups going, whether it be by leading the children, or by running committees, or by selling raffle tickets in the street when the temperature is over 80oC.

The majority of shop-owners and businesses in Moreton and the surrounding area are always very generous and supportive when we are requesting donations for raffle prizes and such, and we thank them whole heartedly.

But then there are the few who never fail to criticise the efforts of others, break our windows just because they can, or leaving us snide, unsigned notes. Can I just say to those few, that instead of sitting there criticising, why not get off your comfy chairs and offer to help in some way. It does not have to be much because anything is better than just criticising those who do make the effort to maintain these valuable groups.
