POLICE are warning people to be on their guard against bogus charity collectors after a Malvern woman uncovered a scam.

The woman received a leaflet requesting clothes and shoes for distribution in Eastern Europe. It gave no charity name, only a number.

Checking this on the internet, she found that the number was that of a fishermen's charity in Scarborough, a legitimate charity which knew nothing of the swindle.

A police spokesman said: "We recognise people who wish to support genuine charities will be annoyed and frustrated by a scam like this. We certainly don't discourage folk in any way from supporting genuine charities.

"Our advice for anyone suspicious or circumspect about an alleged charity or charity activity, is to check out the charity through the charity number, which should be quoted on any leaflet."

Anyone concerned about the authenticity of a charity should call the Charity Commissioners on 0845 3000218 or visit www.charitycommis sion.gov. uk.

Police want to hear from anyone who has received a similar leaflet, or has details of individuals or vehicles involved in the collection of clothing, on 08457 444888, quoting 862S/070706.
