T Collins (Your Letters, July 7) is concerned at the possible demise of the hedge in front of the Malvern Library.

If your correspondent cares to walk along Graham Road, they will notice that that hedge is unique in being entirely untended, and it is on council property.

It is unsightly in that it obscures the view of the library from ground level. It is also a hazard to pedestrians, particularly the elderly and people with pushchairs and young children, because it absorbs half the width of the pavement at a point where traffic comes dangerously close.

There is no need to remove the hedge, although one might take the view that neglect has rendered it beyond redemption. At the very least, however, it needs radical pruning by someone who knows what he is doing, and thereafter regular attention.

Arguably, a railing would be better because it would open up the whole frontage of what is quite an attractive building.

As to the garden itself, the promising work done in re-laying the area round the library entrance seems to have come to a halt, and the rest is a bare wilderness.

Surely only a modest outlay would be needed to complete the excellent re-furbishment programme which has given us a library which a town like Malvern is fortunate to have.
