BRITAIN in Bloom's power to revitalise communities never ceases to amaze and it was gratifying that the sun shone brightly for the visit of the judges to both Upton-upon-Severn and Bromyard this week.
Both communities had put on a marvellous display and we have sympathy with the comment of one of the judges that the task of deciding on the winner is getting harder and harder.
What was especially pleasing to see was the sheer number of people involved, with entries so beautifully presented for marking.
Britain in Bloom is all about bringing communities together for the common good. One of the reasons that Ledbury enjoyed such a long run of success was the strong community spirit that underpins so much that is good in the town.
Malvern will also face the judges shortly and the town need not be worried by the magnificent displays of its neighbours.
It is laying down firm foundations for lasting achievement and those efforts will advance further and further as more people come on board.
Whatever the result of the judges' deliberations, all the communities that have taken part should realise that there are no losers in this event. Even if you do not come back with a trophy, your community is still looking all the better for having taken part.
On the subject of making an impact on the environment, the vandals who damaged a tree in Priory Park went to extraordinary lengths to first snap a substantial branch and then set fire to it.
It is to be lamented that such energy and persistence is not at the disposal of the Malvern in Bloom campaigners, as they could surely put it to more personally fulfilling purposes.
