It is a pity that the proceedings of the Sanitary Committee of the Evesham Town Council on Tuesday were not public as we and the ratepayers at large would not only know what happened, but the reasons which swayed the committee in their action. We understand, but have nothing but hearsay evidence to go upon, that a note which recently appeared in this column with reference to the laying of the new water main up Bridge-street came in for very severe criticism on the part of the Chairman (Alderman Hughes), who is nothing if not direct. Had his remarks been made in public we should have been able to explain the position we took up and why we took it, and we think that in that case the chairman would have seen that his criticism was not justified.

Undoubtedly the surprise of the Vale of Evesham Asparagus Growers' Association Show at the Town Hall on Wednesday was the remarkable exhibit of Mr. J. H. Lowe, of Formby, Lancashire, who took the cup for the heaviest bundle in the show. His bundle of 120 heads was of great size and weighed 24 1/2lb , easily a record for the show. The heaviest bundle exhibited by a local grower weighed 16 1/slb. This was put in by Mr W Perkins, of Badsey, but failed to secure an award. Messrs Barnett Emanuel's cup for the best bundle went to Mr F Curnock, of Littleton; Mr W H Jelfs, of Badsey, took the da Costa cup for the best Flat, and the Danny Hyam cup for the best machine tied bundle was awarded to Mr J E Knight, of Badsey.

There was an entry of over ninety eights, fours pairs and scullers for the ten events on the programme at Evesham Regatta which was held, as usual, on Whit Monday. Evesham's sculler, Michael Careless, won the Cassidy Challenge Cup and the President's Prize (a presentation cup) Careless culled very well, despite the partially flooded state of the river, which made steering a whiff very difficult. As a matter of fact, he and his opponent collided twice in the final heat (though Careless was not to blame) and the race was re-started at these points, but in the end the local man got home comfortably. Careless also won the junior sculling event at Worcester on Saturday, so this was his second victory in three days.

Work is to start next April on a scheme designed to prevent flooding on the Isbourne at Sedgeberrow. The starting date for the scheme, which is to get priority, was given at a well attended public meeting in the village hall on Monday. It was called following a campaign by householders for urgent measures to be taken to clear out the Isbourne because of repeated flooding, particularly in the Winchcombe Road area where damage has often been severe. At Monday's meeting was a team of engineers from the Avon division at Coventry of the Severn Trent Water Authority. The team was led by Mr M. Runacre who used plans and sketches to outline the scheme for flood prevention measures. The scheme involves widening the river, cleaning it out, lowering the bed by 18 inches beneath the bridge at Sedgeberrow and building floodbanks near Sedgeberrow Mill and behind houses in Winchcombe Road.
