NEW Mayor of Worcester Ian Imray has been officially welcomed into his new role.

About 150 people attended the Mayor's Banquet at the city's Guildhall.

People from across the political spectrum attended in recognition of the non-partisan nature of being mayor.

Vice-chancellor of Worcester University Professor David Green gave a speech outlining the special relationship between the institution and the city council and how the new university library will help transform Worcester.

Coun Imray then spoke of his pride at becoming city mayor, vowing to do his best to make the year ahead as memorable as possible.

"It's a very privileged position to be in," he said. "I'm in the middle of a five-week spell without a day off, though I'm not complaining.

"I'm proud to be mayor and I'm looking forward to the year ahead."

Over the year the mayor will raise money for his official charities - Noah's Ark, which helps children cope with deaths in the family, and Acorns Children's Hospice, which cares for children with life-limiting illnesses.
