SWIMMING star and Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew will be at the forthcoming relaunch of The Wellington Inn, Chance's Pitch, as his brother is the new landlord.

Giles Goodhew and his wife Melinda, recently bought the pub and are making a few changes ready for the celebratory bash.

The Goodhew family is made up of five successful brothers but Giles said having one so famous "is a double-edged sword".

Duncan Goodhew won gold at the Moscow Olympics for 100m breastroke and a bronze in the relay and has been awarded an MBE for services to sport.

He is one of the UK's most respected and instantly recognisable athletes, after an accident when he was a child left him completely bald.

All of the brothers battled dyslexia at school and Giles said this struggle contributed to all of them doing well, including Duncan's Olympic success.

Giles has long been in the pub and catering business, can brew ale and has expert knowledge of fine wines and quality food. His restaurant Dene Farm was due to be awarded a Michelin Star before he sold it.

The Wellington Inn will have a pub environment where the dining area is separate from the bar, which sells local ale, Goff's Tournament, for only £1.80 a pint.

"We're going to use produce from local farmers. People like that sort of traceability and not being an urban pub we have to be that little bit more special," said Giles.

The pub is keeping its well-known local chef Beni Rufini but is also employing Paul Haywood, who was working as sous chef at a Michelin starred restaurant and has two AA rosettes.

The pub is currently trading but will have its official relaunch within the next six weeks.
