Pupils at a Droitwich school are an enterprising bunch. They have been using their entrepreneurial skills and ingenuity to turn a few pounds into hundreds for a local charity.

Eighty senior school girls from Whitford and Dodderhill School, Crutch Lane, started off with a fiver each and have so far turned it into £900 for St Richard's Hospice in Worcester.

The pupils collected more than £5,000 for various charities - including St Richard's, Acorns and the county Air Ambulance - last year but this is the first time they have tried the hospice's Flourishing Fivers idea.

Some of the pupils collected money by doing bag packing at Waitrose, car washing, odd jobs and selling handmade greetings cards.

The school's marketing officer Rachel Key said: "The aim is for the girls to invest £5 and see how much money they can make. We do a lots of charity fund-raising and collected £5,000 last year, which is a lot for a small school."
