A CRACKDOWN on nuisance boozers in Stourport will begin on the May Day Bank Holiday, with police given extra powers to tackle anti-social behaviour.

From Monday, May 1, officers will have the right to confiscate open bottles and cans anywhere within the boundaries of the alcohol restriction zone, which covers most of the town.

Anyone refusing to hand over their drinks when asked faces the threat of arrest and could be forced to pay a maximum fine of £500.

Residents supported the scheme last October, when more than 1,500 people were given the chance to submit their views through a public consultation.

Nathan Desmond, Wyre Forest District Council's cabinet member for community and leisure services, said the initiative was not intended to target responsible drinkers.

He added: "It is time to deal with anti-social behaviour before it gets out of hand. A minority of individuals cause the problem and law-abiding people will not be affected by the new alcohol restriction zone."

The district's first zone, in Bewdley, which came into operation in 2003, saw alcohol-related crime and disorder drop by 30 per cent in the first 12 months.

Stourport beat manager, PC Jon Harris, said he was "pleased" at the introduction of the scheme and would monitor its effectiveness.

Maps showing the designated zone are available on the council website at www.wyre
