ON Tuesday night in the Baptists' schoolroom, Ipsley Street, a lecture was given by Brigadier Powell, of the Salvation Army, upon "Japan as I saw It."
Mr F C Huins presided over a fair attendance. The lecture was made interesting by the fact that the lecturer had spent some length of time in Japan.
Brigadier Powell said the Salvation Army began its work in that country about 10 years ago and carried on their mission work on native lines.
The success attending their efforts had attributed to this, and pointed out that other missionary organisations worked upon western methods the Salvation Army had 38 mission stations in Japan and 62 officers.
Japanese customs and manners were described and the religious beliefs and modes of worship with the people explained.
The lecturer, who was attired in Japanese costume, illustrated the lecture with various curios he brought back from the country and spoke of the Japanese as a very pleasant people.
