DROITWICH RFC under-17s tasted final glory by overcoming Bedford to win the Midland Shield on Sunday.

Spa produced a sparkling second half display to get the better of Bedford.

In a tight first half Droitwich took a slight advantage into the break after Alex Shaw had scored a penalty.

Droitwich had to withstand a strong start by their opponents at the start of the second half but grew stronger as the game wore on.

Tough defending by captain Moshen Yafai and Ted Lang kept Beford at bay.

Shaw scored a second penalty but Bedford replied with a one of its own.

Droitwich though produced a late burst to increase their advantage.

The pace of Scott Morris and Tom Richmond made Droitwich a constant threat.

Stefan Buijuisters drove forward and released David Pitt to score a try.

With five minutes remaining Droitwich sealed victory with a second try. Spa's pack drove the maul towards Bedford's try line and Chad Richardson touched down. Shaw converted the try.

Andrew Green was Droitwich's star performer, while Yafai and Morris also impressed.

Victory means Droitwich are on course for a double. The under-17s face Whitchurch in the last eight of the North Midlands Cup.

The winners will play either Moseley or Worcester.
