THE Craig Evans Wheelchair Appeal gained momentum this week with big-hearted residents desperate to lend their support.
Headless Cross mum-of-five Tracey Jones has chosen to run in aid of the appeal when she takes part in the Flora London Marathon next month.
"I signed up for the marathon in October but have been looking for a charity to do it in aid of. When I read about the appeal in your newspaper I knew it was the ideal cause," said the 39-year-old.
She will run in a t-shirt with Craig's photo on it and is looking for businesses and residents to offer sponsorship and further boost the fund.
Anyone interested can call her on 458433.
Town poet Lee Britton has also offered to donate any proceeds from a new anthology of poetry Verses from the Ditch to the appeal.
The part-time lecturer is trying to persuade publishers United Press to reduce the rate of publishing costs so that a larger percentage of the proceeds can go to the campaign.
Meanwhile Jean Leathwaite, who is leading the fundraising, has set up a special bank account at HSBC so readers can pay in donations easily. She is also busy printing campaign posters and t-shirts.
She says more than £400 has been collected so far with a further £175 pledged.
Mrs Leathwaite held a fundraising raffle at The Dog pub and raised almost £90. She is now planning a similar event but needs prizes.
"The appeal would like to thank everyone for their donations and prizes. A big thank you must go to KFC, Staples, Iceland, Instore, Blockbuster, Pets at Home and Your Choice for their generous prizes."
And Helen Curtis has made headway with her plans for a fundraising family fun day for Craig's appeal, with musicians, stall-holders and face-painters all offering their services.
"I have been overwhelmed by the support for the appeal so far.
"I can't believe there are so many people out there willing to give up their spare time."
She said she'd like to hear from someone with a bouncy castle, refreshment stall-holders and entertainers like clowns.
There will be a meeting to discuss the event at Tenacres Meeting Rooms in Quibury Close, Winyates on Tuesday, April 11 at 7.30pm. All are welcome. Anyone who would like to help can call Mrs Leathwaite on 401782 or email her at jleathwaite@jleathwaite.plus.com
Donations can be made to the Craig Evans Wheelchair Appeal at HSBC on Church Green West or through Mrs Leathwaite.
