ST CATHARINE'S, fielding a weakened side, were thrashed 8-2 in the Cotswold Floorball League divisional game against Dormer House.

And, things looked ominous in last Thursday's final when their Moreton-in-Marsh opponents, often vulnerable to an early goal themselves, scored through Joe Slatter after just two minutes.

It was soon 2-0 when a pass from captain Henry Leonard was tucked away neatly by Sam Elson.

Halfway through the first period a crucial decision saw a Dormer player sin-binned for five minutes, for an albeit unintentional, but dangerous, use of the stick.

Rory Flowers took full advantage for the Saints by shooting in a goal, but the red and black tide couldn't penetrate the Dormer defence despite a couple of sin-binnings later in the half.

The second half was frenetic as the Campden side pushed for the equaliser and outshot the holders 15-10.

Goalkeeper Matt Wells and his defence, though, were superb but were forced to concede a penalty shot for a stick hit just as Molly Rogers was shooting.

Captain Flowers took the responsibility, but was denied by a good save from Wells.

St Catharine's final chance evaporated when they incurred their only sin-binning of the match in the final minute.

Both teams and their supporters were generous in praise of the opponents and officials.

Jon Bryan and Jason Beasley, both GBFF referees , were an important reason for the success, excitement and enjoyment of this, the best ever final.

The competition will continue next year, although the format may change if more teams enter.

The GBFF and IFF wish to promote the women's game so, if any of the schools wish to enter a 'girls only' team as well as a boys' or mixed team, they will need to contact Andrew Clough.
