SIR - As one of the dog owners who regularly walks my dog on Perdiswell I attended the meeting on Friday, March 10 regarding the fence erected down the length of the "new" Sports field.

The comment of the city council spokesman quoted in your paper on Saturday beggared belief when he stressed that the fence was a temporary construction to prevent rabbit damage.

The invasive and prickly shrubs planted within this fence to a width of approximately two metres will certainly not be temporary and will form a fairly dense thicket when mature.

This barrier is on the right-hand side of the grass walkway (from the Bilford Road) and the council has planted many more of the same type of tree the other side of the track along the edge of the golf course.

When these plants are full-grown I am concerned for the safety of lone members of the public walking this track as it will be enclosed by the hedges on either side.

The only reason I can see for this over-abundance of planting and the type of trees used is to discourage people from walking across the golf course. Incidentally, the "protective" fence could easily be jumped by any self-respecting rabbit!
