SIR - I would like to congratulate Coun Alex Kear on his political scaremongering and electioneering over Perdiswell fields.

Are you up for re-election councillor? As I have strong views about environmental issues and have previously campaigned to protect public open spaces, I have been to view the offending fence. I didn't have a problem with walking around it. It is a low fence enclosing an area about 10 feet wide and less than a quarter-of-a-mile long and you are able to get to the other side by going to the top or bottom end of the field - or you can easily step over the fence, tread on a few trees and get to the other side.

I could quite clearly see that it has been erected to protect the newly-planted trees. Soil has been banked up to the fence to stop the rabbits getting to the young saplings which, if they are allowed to grow, will improve the area for everyone; the dog walkers, the golfers and the wildlife. As a conservationist I would be happy to put up with the short-term inconvenience for the long-term benefits.

COLIN LAYLAND,

Worcester.
