MALVERN mountain biker Liam Killeen won gold in the men's individual cross-country event at the baking hot Lysterfield Park on the edge of Melbourne.

Killeen, who finished third in Manchester four years ago when he was just 20, turned Commonwealth Games bronze into gold with a superb ride over the eight 6.4km laps of Victoria's State Mountain Bike Course.

Killeen finished in two hours 13 minutes 11 seconds, just 15 seconds ahead of his team-mate Oli Beckingsale and 32 ahead of Canada's Seamus McGrath.

"It's a pretty special feeling and it hasn't completely sunk in yet," said Killeen. "I'm happy I've come here and achieved what I set out to do."
