PUPILS from Malvern College took part in New York's Tuxedo Club's annual gold racquets tournament during a six-day tour to America.
Charlie Griffiths, James Sheppard and Ollie Sloane took part in a singles competition, the Cartier Gold Racquet, and in a doubles tournament where there was a draw for pairings.
In the singles competition the Malvern players went out to the eventual finalists. Ollie Sloane was defeated by the No 1 seed Rob Walker 2-0 in the quarter-finals, who then went on to defeat Charlie Griffiths by the same margin in a semi-final. James Sheppard was defeated in a quarter-final 2-0 by the eventual winner, Ollie Howick.
The doubles' draw had the College boys each paired with club players from Tuxedo, Boston and Philadelphia. Whilst Ollie Sloane and partner did well to get to the semi-final stage, the star Malvern performer was James Sheppard, who reached the final with his partner. The pair were the eventual winners of a hard fought contest, 17-14.
