Last week's Malvern Memories picture in The Reporter, showing the visit of the queen to Ledbury in the 1950s brought back happy memories for Wellington Heath man Nick Dykes.

The tallest, bespectacled man in the line-up to meet the queen and the Duke of Edinburgh was none other than his own father, Basil, who was then the town clerk.

My Dykes said: "I was a boy of ten, watching from the Alms Houses across the road and I saw my father crack jokes with the duke and make him laugh."

The duke had commented on the beauty of the flowers presented to the Queen, and Mr Dykes' father responded that they had been kept in the freezer all winter, to make sure they were fresh for the royal visit.

Mr Dykes recalled that it was a beautiful May Day, and cherry trees in the town centre were in full bloom.

n Susan Morris, of Ledbury, rang Malvern Memories to say the royal visit took place on April 24, 1957, not 1953 as we said last week. A check back through our files shows she was right.
