A GREAT-grandmother who has dedicated her life to caring for children has been nominated for the Pride in Worcestershire campaign.

Helena Morris is a prime example of the type of person the Worcester News celebrates, for making an outstanding contribution to the community.

The 83-year-old, from Wick, near Pershore, does voluntary work for the Youth Offenders Service, helping to decide the best way for wayward youngsters to repay their debt to society.

"It's a very rewarding job," she said. "I've never met a bad one yet. Disillusioned and angry, yes, but not bad."

Mrs Morris, who was nominated by her 31-year-old daughter Catherine Gibbs, of Drakes Broughton, near Pershore, has fostered and adopted countless numbers of children with her late husband Donald over a 45-year period.

She said that she has more than 40 grandchildren and more than that number of great-grandchildren.

Catherine said that her mother deserved a pat on the back for all that she had achieved.

"Mum's lived life to the full and has done more than most," she said.

Mrs Morris is also a dedicated public speaker for the Association of Speakers Clubs, talking about children and events that have touched her life.

She recently won the Speaker of the Year award for the Cotswold area and got through to the semi-finals for the national competition.
