WORRIED motorists fear one of Bromsgrove's busiest roundabouts is an accident blackspot waiting to happen.
Worcestershire County Council completed a £100,000 project in June, in a bid to prevent accidents at the Slideslow island.
But motorists have contacted the Advertiser/Messenger expressing their concerns over its safety, claiming road markings are confusing.
Tracey Kelham, from Aston Fields, said she dreaded approaching the island.
"Other drivers simply ignore the signs stating that if you are continuing along the A38 you must approach in the right hand lane.
"I get fed up of being 'beeped' because a driver in the left-hand lane thinks I am cutting them up."
She added: "This island will definitely produce more accidents rather than prevent them."
Another concerned motorist said: "The arrows on the left are intended to direct us towards Redditch, which is immediately left, and Oakalls, which is diagonally left.
"Yet the arrow for the Oakalls points straight ahead in exactly the same direction as the one on the right which is intended to send us straight ahead along the A38.
"I believe it would be far safer if the arrows reflected exactly the direction they are trying to send us."
A county council spokesman said there has been a significant reduction in the number of accidents since work was carried out to improve the island.
He said: "In the three years prior to the implementation of the scheme, there were a total of 22 recorded injury accidents.
"Since the scheme's completion in June 2005 there has only been one recorded accident."
He added: "We've spoken to the Highways Partnership Unit and no-one has contacted us to raise any concerns."
Anyone with concerns should call the Highways Partnership Unit on 881365.
