YOUNG people in Redditch and Bromsgrove are not taking adequate care of themselves, a damning new report claims.
Director of Public Health Dr Caron Grainger delivered her report on the welfare of residents in the two towns at a meeting of the Redditch and Bromsgrove Primary Care Trust board earlier this month.
She said that although the health of local residents was generally good, there were some areas for concern.
"While many people successfully lead healthy lifestyles, it's clear that young people and those from less well off backgrounds are storing up problems for the future," she said.
"Too many young people smoke, drink to excessive amounts and do not eat the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. They are storing up problems for themselves in terms of heart disease and cancer.
"Encouraging our children and young people to adopt healthy lifestyles is key to ensuring that they live long and healthy lives."
Her top tips for better health include giving up smoking, taking regular exercise, eating an abundance of colourful fruit and vegetables and only consuming moderate amounts of alcohol.
