MORE than 150 people supported the annual Mayor's Charity Banquet at Worcester's Guildhall and raised thousands of pounds for worthy causes.

The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Aubrey Tarbuck, has chosen to divide the cash between the Worcester Volunteer Centre, the Eye Trust Unit Fund and the Music and Light Appeal.

Money will also go to the many charities supported by Worcester Rotary Club, which organised the fund-raising aspect of Friday night's successful event.

"More than £1,000 was raised from the auction alone," said Rotary Club president David Inight. "It was a lovely evening and it really will make a huge difference to all the charities we support each year.

"The generosity of the people was there for all too see."

Mayors from around the county were present, as well as the Dean of Worcester the Very Reverend Peter Marshall, who said the Worcester Grace.

The evening started with a champagne reception before the guests sat down to a three-course meal and listened to traditional Victorian music. An 18-year old magician, known as 'The Bizarre Ollie Mealing', entertained and baffled those attending with series of card tricks. The star lot in the raffle was a special Trafalgar Bowl created by Worcester Royal Porcelain, in bone china and decorated with battle scenes. A £300 dishwasher, £300 of men's wear vouchers, gym membership and free CrownGate Parking were also among the prizes.

Coun Tarbuck said: "It was a fantastic night and everyone enjoyed themselves. "We don't know how much has been raised yet, but we received £1,800 in advance from companies and people who couldn't make it, so it will be thousands."
