TAXI drivers in Worcester are to be issued with new identification badges to protect the public from the dangers of unlicensed drivers.
Their current badges are made by laminating pieces of paper with the driver's photograph affixed to it - making it easy for unlicensed drivers to forge them.
But following an investment in special computer hardware and software, from April 1 the city council will issue credit card-sized badges holographed with the council crest and printed onto specially designed ID cards.
The move has been welcomed by Worcester City Taxi Driver's Association.
Chairman Mohammed Ali said: "Anything which helps prevent ID card fraud and makes it more difficult for unlicensed taxi drivers to operate has to be a good thing. And these new cards will be much easier to carry and wear."
A council spokesman said: "The licensing section is hopeful that the new design will make positive differences for the public and licensed drivers in Worcester.
"The new badges will be more durable, readable, professional and less susceptible to fraud."
The new badges will be issued to new drivers and those who are renewing their licences.
Drivers who wish to upgrade to the new style before their next renewal will also be able to do so.
