PREPARE to get those paddles ready and drummers steady because the Worcester South Rotary Club Dragon Boat Festival is back.

The event raised thousands of pounds for charities last year and organisers hope this year will be bigger and better.

The festival, on Sunday, July 9, promises to get those muscles working hard, with a tug of war competition, that dragon boat teams can enter for free.

There will be the chance to have a drink in the floating bar or take a ride in a classic car. Other attractions will include a funfair and side shows.

Thousands of spectators are expected along the banks of the River Severn, at Worcester's north quay, to watch teams battle it out in the race.

Last year, 23 teams, including the Worcester News's Rowing Reporters took part.

Michael Jeeves, senior vice president of the WSRC said last year's event was exceptional, with more than £15,000 raised for charity.

"The weather was good and we had a great time," he said. "There were big crowds and it was a great family day with some very competitive racing."

Mr Reeves hoped to better this success for the 2006 event.

"We would be looking to get 36 teams this time," he said. "We are hoping from support from the business community."

This year's charities, all Worcester-based, will be St Richard's Hospice, which helps adults with life-threatening illnesses; Acorns, which helps life-limited children; and Maggs Day Centre, which helps the homeless in Worcester.

Money will also support The Noah's Ark Trust, which provides a grief support service for children; WSRC, which helps people in the community and abroad and Life Education Centres, which take mobile classrooms to county schools.

Each team (a minimum of 10 people) will paddle a 30-foot boat, led by a drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the rear steering.

No experience is necessary and each team will be guaranteed three races.

The winners will be presented with a bottle of champagne and trophy, with medals for the top three teams.

There will be prizes for the best dressed crew, the team and individual with the most sponsorship money (to be submitted on the day to qualify) and a bottle of champagne for those who raise at least £150.

The entry fee is £350 per team. For entry forms or more information e-mail jeeves@the newcottage.co.uk or call Mr Jeeves on 01905 640953.
