TIM Arridge (Your Letters, March 3) used Hanley Swan as an example for a 30mph speed sign saying: "the traffic has slowed considerably since the village was granted its 30mph limit."
I'm not sure where this assumption has come from, if only it were true.
The drivers who always follow the speed limits are not the issue. We still have a major problem with drivers coming through the village at 60mph plus. No sign on earth will stop them, only cameras.
The main problem is in the early morning and early evening, when the road is more like a race track.
I and other villagers have rung the police, who say they are doing all they can and that because we haven't had any deaths on the road lately, we don't have a major problem. Although when we do get a policeman with a speed gun he always catches speeders.
Every week people's pets are injured or killed on the Hanley Road due to speed and this included 'The Colonel', the village gander, who was knocked over and just left on the road.
He was lucky and survived after a stay at the Vale Rescue Centre.
We have a problem and we have it now, is it going to take a person's life before we get help? I hope not.
If any other villager is concerned about traffic speed, speak out and help get it slowed.
CHERYL PHELPS, Hanley Swan.
