The letter about the outrageous intervention from a member of the audience at Malvern Theatre struck a chord, not that I have ever experienced quite such an extreme example, but whenever I attend the theatre here I find the attitude of the audience infuriating.
It does not matter what play is being performed, the audience always seems to assume that its light entertainment and the response is laughter at the most inappropriate moments or constant knowing chuckles.
Two Thousand Years was a case in point. Yes, some of it is supposed to be funny, but not all of it. It came across as some kind of sitcom, due to the response of the audience. I am going to try Festen and if everyone falls about laughing during that one, then I shall have to give up on Malvern and go to Stratford instead.
The experience of live theatre is based on the interaction between the audience and the actors and I believe that the Malvern audience is sadly limited in its ideas about theatre and art in general. What about more education on this front?
