WYRE Forest residents are being urged to check their smoke alarms following a house fire in Spennells.

The fire, caused by an electrical fault on a toaster, broke out in Dunlin Drive just before midnight on Thursday, February 16.

The householder managed to put the fire out before firefighters arrived but a check of the house discovered there were no batteries in the smoke alarms.

A Kidderminster firefighter said: "This person was very lucky, as a few minutes later, the fire could have spread quite rapidly.

"However, there were two smoke alarms in the house without any batteries, which could have provided an early warning.

"We are reminding residents to ensure their smoke alarms contain batteries and are in good working order."
