I WRITE in response to the anonymous letter Plea on Memorial Work in the Shuttle/Times & News (February 16).
During 2004 the trustees of the Kidderminster War Memorials Conservation Trust unanimously agreed that the Angel of Peace outside St Mary's Church should be the first phase of the memorial restoration.
This was fully restored at a cost of £14,000 and re-dedicated in September 2005.
This decision by the trustees was entirely justified, as the retaining wall at the rear of the crescent-shaped memorial was unsafe and needed to be addressed first before any memorial work started.
The wall, with reinforcement pillars added, was repaired in November 2005 at a cost of £38,000 - all paid for by Wyre Forest District Council.
At present the trust is awaiting confirmation of a significant grant. On receipt of this the restoration of the crescent- shaped memorial will commence.
The completion date for the work is expected to be sometime in late 2006, and this will be at a cost of approximately £38,000.
The trust holds meetings almost monthly and members of the public and the local press are more than welcome to attend.
Donations towards this worthy cause should be forwarded to me c/o 26 Vicar Street, Kidderm-inster, Worcestershire DY10 1DA.
KENNETH STOKES
Chairman of the trustees,
Kidderminster War Memorials Conservation Trust
