A KEEN Worcester biker will head out on to Europe's highways, crossing 10 countries in 10 days in the name of charity - just as soon as he passes his driving test.

Iain Mackintosh, service development manager for Birmingham's Age Concern, is set to take on the mammoth 2,400-mile journey across Europe in May to raise cash for the charity.

However, the 31-year-old Tolladine Road resident has a big hurdle to cross first - to get rid of his L-plates.

Iain has been a keen off-road biker for years but has yet to get his full motorbike licence, although he hopes to do so in the next month.

Since the new year, he has passed his theory test with flying colours and has also been offered a Suzuki V-Strom 1,000cc touring bike and clothing from two businesses in Halesowen.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to it - it should be fantastic. Obviously I've just got to pass the driving test first, though.

"We're not going to be riding on the motorways - we'll be riding along mountain roads and getting to see the sights. Hopefully, the views will be amazing."

Iain is due to set off from Birmingham on Friday, May 19, and his journey will take him across France, through Belgium, Holland, Germany, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy and Monaco before returning to England on Monday, May 29.

He will be joined by fellow Age Concern worker Paul Adams, from Wigan. They plan to cover between 200 and 250 miles every day, sleeping in bed and breakfasts along the way.

They will also be taking a camera to film the adventure.

The pair are looking for as many businesses and individuals as possible to sponsor them in a bid to raise £40,000 for the charity.

The money will be used for projects including a telephone befriending scheme and a lunch club.

Iain said: "If we don't raise money for services for Age Concern then older people will experience a poorer quality of life so this is a great opportunity for us to raise money for them and travel Europe on a bike at the same time."

Anyone wanting to sponsor the duo can contact Iain at Birmingham Age Concern on 0121 3623650.
