OLD and new members attending the February meeting enjoyed an interesting talk by Dave Bates, dahlia correspondent for Garden News.
Mr Bates, who has appeared on BBC's Gardeners World and is a national show winner and judge, gave a fascinating insight into the world of dahlias, their propagation, growing, varieties and some useful tips on showing.
Members were shown the rings which set the sizes for the various types of dahlia and if even one petal touches the inside of the ring, the whole exhibit is disqualified. Very disheartening when you have spent weeks growing the blooms and hours arranging and transporting them.
Members could only admire the dedication of growers like Mr Bates, who take such setbacks in their stride, and were privileged to see a slide of the world's first carnation dahlia, which has been developed by him.
The next meeting is on Monday, March 13, at 7.30pm at the White Hart Inn. All welcome.
