ORGANISERS of a re-enactment event that entertained thousands of people in Worcester have hit out over having to pay to hire the Guildhall.
The Living History extravaganza on Saturday saw scores of re-enactors from far and wide volunteer their time to entertain the people of Worcester free of charge.
But they say the event, which raised cash for the Mayor's charities - was marred by them having to fork-out and pay for the Guildhall.
City re-enactor Richard Delingpole spent weeks organising the annual spectacular and everyone involved experienced considerable personal expense.
He added that when, supported by Mayor Aubrey Tarbuck, he asked for the use of the Guildhall for free, he was turned down.
Mr Delingpole said: "The public love this event and we all give our time for free and don't charge a penny entrance.
"We paid the money, which was probably less than a lot of people pay, but feel let down as this is an event for Worcester. People should be encouraged when they organise things.
"It seems we have had so many obstacles put in our way by the Guildhall despite the Mayor saying this is the kind of thing it should be used for more often.
"But the most insulting thing is that all day we have been collecting money for the Mayor's charities."
The event saw historical re-enactors clad in authentic costumes from various time periods entertain crowds with their stands, knowledge and impressive displays in the Guildhall.
Everything from a 17th Century wedding to Second World War American soldiers drew in the crowds.
Coun Tarbuck opened the event and said it was disappointing the re-enactors had been charged but that he would get the money back for them if he could.
"I think it is a fantastic event that does so much for tourism in Worcester.
"It is awful that they are expected to pay anything at all as so much time, effort and money goes in from these volunteers to do something for the community.
"Thousands of people will see these people and their fantastic costumes and so, if I can't get them a refund, I will do all I can to get them a grant to cover this cost."
No one from for Worcester City Council was available at the time of going to press.
