SIR - It never ceases to amuse me how your correspondent Bill Davison, and others, (letters, February 13) continue to claim that residents of St John's have some sort of exclusive right to determine the location of Christopher Whitehead School.
Historically, there is no justification for this. The school was opened in 1934 for the exclusive purpose of accomodating 298 pupils from the defunct St Clement's School. St John's Schools continued to operate as a separate entity.
The site was acquired by the education authority, then Worcester County Borough Council and purchased by the city ratepayers of whom I was one. Subsequently, it was enlarged and extended to meet changing requirements - its catchment area expanded far and away beyond the boundaries of St John's parish. It seems to me the proposed new site would ideally suit residents of Dines Green, who, for many years, have had to send their children into St John's. However, it is for the experts to decide whether this,or some other site, is most suitable.
Certainly the existing site appears to have reached its limitations and should be disposed of in the best interests of the taxpayer rather than involve even more expense in costly improvisation.
Fortunately, the enhanced commercial value of the site will help to reduce rebuilding costs even without Tesco's participation.
John Hinton,
Worcester.
