SIR - Chris Moncrieff (Worcester News, February 21) should waste no pity on the Liberal Democrats. Two weeks after an excellent by-election victory fought and won by the Party in Dunfermline, the Liberal Democrats are in good heart. With the party back up to 21 per cent in opinion polls, the party leadership contest is coming to an exciting finish with excellent performances by the three contenders.

In contrast, look at the other two main parties.

No one has been fooled by David Cameron's pretence of being a 'Liberal' and, instead, people voted in droves for the real thing in Dunfermline. The Tories came a poor fourth with a mere 7.8 per cent of the vote, 2.5 per cent lower than at the general election last May. The Spring Conference in Harrogate will be in celebratory mood.
