SIR - With reference to the Government's smoking ban I feel compelled to write. I believe that the Labour party came to power as the party of choice. Well, they have just destroyed 12 million smokers' choice.

This is a large chunk of the voting population. Many pubs and clubs will face closure which will ultimately also affect non smokers who also use these establishments.

If this law was sensible, pubs and clubs could have had both smoking and non smoking areas. ie. the lounge and the bar, or smoking or non smoking pubs; and the same goes for coffee shops, cafs and restaurants. Ultimately breweries and licensees know their customers and should be allowed to make the choice.

There are many pollutants in the atmosphere that can cause illnesses such as cancer. Actually, smoking stimulates the brain and has other benefits. Perhaps Mr Blair should try it. He and his cronies might actually make some decent decisions for a change. Anyway, Mr Blair should realise that a year is a long time in politics. This is not the end but it is the beginning. I am sure that the police won't be very happy, they have far more important things to do than mess about stopping people smoking. This law is unenforceable; it is also probably an infringement of the international bill of human rights.

Finally, we will fight this law in the pubs, in the clubs, in hotels and in the workplace; we will never surrender.

BOB DAVIES,

Worcester
