A BRAVE Worcester schoolgirl who is battling cancer could soon be on the way to meet Mickey Mouse and friends thanks to kind-hearted city centre shopkeepers.
Danielle Hefti, aged six, of Dalegarth Court, Warndon, was diagnosed with Wilm's tumour - a type of kidney cancer that affects children - last April, but her strength and determination has proved to be an inspiration to shop owners in Mealcheapen Street.
They have joined forces to try to raise enough money to send the six-year-old and her family to Orlando, Florida, for a well-earned break.
They are raffling off a Hot Diamonds watch and have so far raised £435.
Meloney Collins, who works at The Nail Bar in the street, said: "Danielle came in to have her nails done before Christmas as a little treat and everyone just took to her.
"She is such a brave little girl and so me and Julie Drew, who runs the hairdressers above us, decided to raise some money.
"Julie bought the watch and we are hoping to sell enough tickets to raise £1,000. I am quite confident Disney will provide the accommodation because of Danielle's circumstances, and so that money will be for flights and spending money."
The fund-raising effort spread and now most of the shops in Mealcheapen Street and further afield are involved.
John Phillips, the manager of country pursuits shop F Durrant & Son in Mealcheapen Street, said he was hoping to organise a meal in order to generate more funds.
He said: "Most of the shop owners are parents and when you hear of something like this, it touches you. I think all the shops have been really supportive."
Danielle's mum, Louise Hefti, aged 27, said: "I think what they are doing is wonderful.
"We have only been coming to the nail bar for a few months and they have been really great with her. I can't thank everyone there enough.
"I am proud of Danielle. She has been so brave through it all.
"It's a devastating thing to happen to any family, but she's full of life and doesn't let it bother her."
