New by-laws issued by the Worcestershire County Council mark a distinct advance.
It is now an offence to leave orange peel, banana skins, or other dangerous substances on any footway, and it is to be hoped that this by-law will be strictly enforced. Those who are working so hard to combat the spread of consumption will welcome the clause which provides that "no person shall spit on the floor, side or wall of any public hall, public waiting room, or place of public entertainment, whether admission thereto be obtained upon payment or not". The chairman of Malvern Council (Mr R G Reed) has received a progress report on the restoration of Westminster Abbey from the surveyor of the fabric. Malvern may be thought to have a special interest in the Abbey, for the Priory Church was a daughter church for some time after its founding in 1037. The surveyor adds that preservation of the Abbey will require continuous work and very heavy expenditure for many years ahead. Malvern Gazette, February 24, 1956.

The first serious fall of snow in Malvern this year seemed to take most people, including the Met Office, by surprise.
Divisional surveyor Mr John Garner said he became worried on Saturday night when the first few flakes began to fall.
"I telephoned the forecaster at Birmingham Airport, who told me there might be two or three inches of snow that night," he said.
"By 3am, it was obvious we would have to get the men out and clear the roads." Malvern Gazette, February 26, 1981.
