Sir - I note that the Armed Forces are to get a rise of 3.3 per cent to help recruitment and this increase is alleged to be above the inflation rate of 2.4 per cent.
Does anyone really believe that this inflation percentage is correct?
Over the last 12 months, petrol and fuel oils have gone up 18 per cent, gas 20 per cent+, electricity 15 per cent, water 8 per cent and rates are likely to be up by 5 per cent or over. The prices of many other items have also increased.
In addition, and not widely publicised, the new Dental Work Contract comes into operation from April 1, 2006. It seems unpopular with many dentists but some of the NHS charges will be raised by 300 per cent!
Thus an NHS tooth filling at present costs £14; after April it will cost £42.
Many pensioners not on full benefits have little hope of meeting these higher costs of living in 2006 and, doubtless, there will be many more convictions for non payment of rates.
Perhaps the dour, Incapability Brown will spare a thought for them as they troop into court shivering from hypothermia, with rotting teeth. Let us try to solve the problem of poverty in the UK before handing any more tax payer's money or credit to corrupt African governments.
C C Vyvyan-Robinson,
Himbleton.
