SIR - Your item "Treasury pulls plug on fruit farm plea" reports the end of the long-running dispute about the facilities provided for migrant workers at the strawberry farm.

But what the saga highlights is not only planning issues, but the increasing use of migrant labour and skills.

Apparently, Tesco's in Kidderminster is about to recruit a contingent of Polish workers. Is it the freedom of the market gone mad, or the opportunity to enrich our lives and understanding ?

I must declare an interest. I have a friend who is a doctor from Poland working here who admits that the Polish health service is being affected by the loss of doctors and nurses to other EU countries including Britain.

And a Polish dentist told me that when she came to the UK, it was on a plane chartered to bring other dentists !!! An amusing concept, but what does it say about our NHS ?

Doctors and nurses are also recruited from some African countries at a dreadful cost to healthcare there. For some reason we seem incapable of meeting our own needs from the UK's 60 million population. The NHS trains thousands of doctors, dentists and nurses every year. Are young people seeing other roles with better money and more sociable hours as their dream career ?

What happens in the future when the "new" EU countries become more prosperous and many of the professionals want to return to their countries?
