LAND behind a Kidderminster church is being given a huge makeover, costing more than £30,000, to transform it into a community garden.

The creation of the Burcher Green Community Garden at the rear of St Chad's Church, Comberton, has been made possible by the local urban safety group, the Off-more/Comberton Action Group - OCAG - which has obtained the funding.

So far, £25,000 has come from a Living Spaces award and £5,000 from Brambles Industry Ltd, plus contributions from the police, church, Wyre Forest Community Housing and local people.

All the hard landscaping has been completed with paths made from recycled materials. Grasscrete parking bays have been created for residents of the neighbouring bungalows and new turf has been laid.

Fifteen mature trees have been planted as part of the scheme, some of them funded in memory of people who have died, and the OCAG is urging the community to look after and respect the trees and the garden as a place of peace.

On Saturday, the community will be planting shrubs in a border behind the church and schoolchildren will help plant hedges next month and bulbs in the autumn.
