ONE of the world's most celebrated and widely travelled ensembles promise an outstanding concert in Evesham tomorrow.
The Chilingirian Quartet are renowned for their thrilling interpretations of the great quartets and commanding performances of the contemporary repertoire.
Their recital for Evesham and District Music Club at the arts centre (7.30pm) continues a successful season for the club with works by three great composers, Hayden, Shostakovich and Schumann.
The quartet was founded in 1971 by Levon Chilingirian and Philip de Groote. While each member is a virtuoso musician, their success as a quartet has earned the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Ensemble Award.
The Chilingirian is Quartet-in-Residence at the Royal College of Music in London, resident ensemble at the Lake District Summer Music Festival and in 2005 had a residency at the University of California at Irvine.
European engagements have included major festivals such as the Edinburgh, Aldeburgh and Tivoli and prestigious series at The Barbican Centre, Wigmore Hall, Concertgebouw, Munich Herkulessaal, Zurich Tonhalle, Stockholm Konserthuset and Vienna Kinserthaus.
They tour North America every season and have performed extensively in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Asia, Africa and South America.
Levon Chilingirian studied at the Royal College of Music where he is now a professor, and as a soloist he has played with various leading orchestras.
Violinist Charles Stewart, a former Adrian Boult music scholar, graduated from London's Guildhall School of Music and before joining the Chilingirian in 1992 he performed and recorded with a number of leading chamber groups.
Violist Susie Meszaros studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School, where she now teaches. In 1977 she made her Wigmore Hall debut in a duo with Yehudi Menuhin and is co-founder of the Villiers Piano Quartet.
Cellist Philip de Groote won many prizes in his early years before entering the Royal College of Music. In 1971 he was awarded the Tenuto Prize from Belgian radio/tv and later co-founded the Chilingirian Quartet, touring world-wide and making more than 50 recordings for several major labels.
Tickets are available at the door and early bookings at the Evesham Bookshop, Library Arcade and Almonry Centre and cost from £12 with concessions.
