SET in 1930s France, this masterclass in wit proved a fitting vehicle for two of the country's finest actors.
Belinda Lang, best known as the star of television's 2Point4 Children, and Julian Wadham, who appeared in blockbuster film The English Patient, play the divorced couple Amanda and Elyot who are thrown back into each other's arms after a series of bizarre coincidences.
The pair meet again after five years apart, finding themselves staying in adjoining honeymoon suites.
Their new partners suspect something is wrong but are oblivious to the relationship's renewal until the end of the play.
Belinda was perfect in the role of feisty Amanda who, while she can't live with Elyot, can't live without him either.
The scenes when the two try to rekindle their old passions are superbly played and the fight scene at the end just couldn't be beaten for dramatic effect.
Robert Portal plays Victor Prynne, Amanda's new husband, while Elyot's new wife Sybil is splendidly played by Mary Stockley.
Victor is a finely drawn character who, whatever his new wife has done, just wants the best for her even if it causes him pain and was finely played.
You are left thinking Amanda would be better off with Victor but, as we all know, the heart tends to rule the head.
Sybil, on the other hand, is the exact opposite of Amanda and, even though there is no doubt she loves Elyot, it seems the feelings are not being reciprocated.
In the end, passion wins over sense and Amanda and Elyot disappear together and the audience is left thinking the love circle will start all over again. AG
