CHARLOTTE Bronte's best loved classic tale of the poor, plain and unloved Jane Eyre (Monica Dolan) takes on a modern twist while still keeping a firm loyalty to the original book.

Jane's servile nature formed from her strict Victorian upbringing is clear from her appearance on the outside, plain clothes and modest hair. But Jane also has a passionate, fiery side. A side she feels she should keep locked up for fear of the havoc she may wreak.

This side of Jane is beautifully illustrated with the help of a second actress (Myriam Acharki, who also plays Rochester's mad wife, Bertha), attaching herself and adapting the same form as Jane to show the more exuberant side of her personality.

A background of moody skies and simple lighting sets the perfect scene for this compelling adaptation, directed by Polly Teale of the Shared Experience Theatre Company.

The play's small cast of eight, most doubling up for other parts throughout the night, should indulge in credit.

The rest of the cast includes Jane's sharp tempered love interest, Mr Rochester, played by James Clyde, Philip Rham, (Richard Mason and cellist), Sarah Ball (Bessie and Grace Poole), Joan Blackham (Mrs Reed and Mrs Fairfax), and Octavia Walters (Helen and Adele).

The play runs until Saturday. Box office: 01684 892277.
