WYRE Forest residents are being invited to comment on proposals to protect Stourport's buildings of local historical and architectural interest.

The "Local List" has been introduced to highlight buildings that help make up the character and appearance of the town but are not identified by English Heritage as being of national importance.

Stourport's "Local List" is the second phase of a scheme to identify such buildings and structures throughout the Wyre Forest district.

The Kidderminster "Local List" was adopted in 2004 and included around 300 buildings and structures.

It is anticipated that Bewdley will be surveyed early next year, with a consultation during the summer of 2007, and the rural areas are expected to follow.

Wyre Forest District Councillor James Dudley, responsible for environment and economic regeneration, said: "Post-war development around the district has seen many buildings full of character demolished or altered beyond recognition.

"The "Local List" provides the opportunity to recognise the ones that are still standing and to work with the owners to achieve sympathetic alterations when planning permission is applied for and also to help preserve the character and appearance of our district."

The "Local List" consultation runs until Thursday, March 16. Details of the draft proposals can be accessed on the Wyre Forest District Council website at www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk and in Stourport Library.

It can also be found at the reception of the Planning, Health and Environment Office at Duke House, Clensmore Street, Kidderminster. Alternatively, call the conservation officer on 01562 732928.
