A CITY councillor is campaigning to boost the image of a local community centre and persuade more people to use its facilities.

The Green Centre, in Gresham Road, Dines Green is a venue for community clubs, business meetings, private parties and much more.

Councillor David Candler, whose St John's ward includes Dines Green, is vice-chairman of Westside Worcester Ltd, a charity company that runs the centre.

He has written and designed a mini-brochure to spearhead a campaign to promote all that the centre has to offer.

Coun Candler said a regular flow of income was needed to put on events that will attract all members of the community.

He said: "One way of achieving this it to maximise to the full excellent facilities available at The Green Centre.

"It is currently well equipped to provide the base for fully-catered business meetings and smaller scale conferences as well as social events, dances and family parties."

The centre has four main rooms. The largest is the Roly Matthews Hall, named after a man who used to live in Dines Green, which can accommodate up to 140 people.

There is also the Doris Hunt room for smaller conferences, an activity room for childcare groups and a kitchen meaning the staff can provide breakfasts, lunches or formal dinners.

Stacy Morris, manager of The Green Centre, said: "Sure Start use the centre three times a week, we have a Fun to Learn class, an after-school club, an adult education course and an art class called Art for the Terrified.

"Many groups book long term to avoid disappointment but we welcome any new classes or private events."

Worcester Sixth Form and Worcester Technology College also use the venue.

The centre is hoping to soon open from 9am to 9pm, seven days a week.
